Frequently Asked Questions

Professional baby casting appointments are 7 days a week and can be planned to suit your babys routine. Babys hand or foot is placed in the casting gel for around 1-2 minutes until set. It will allow for wriggly hands and feet as it slowly stiffens until firm but not hard. The hand or foot is then gently wiggled out of the mold and comes out clean. Parents/adults are able to hold their children throughout the process. Once we have taken all the molds, the hands and feet are cast in the hardest and strongest gypsum available, producing a highly detailed finish that is ready for your choice of color.
Casting sessions are held on site at our Ballantyne. Charlotte location or at a nearby location.
If you are local then we can come to you for a mobile session for a standard $15.
*Additional travel costs may apply for outer cities – ensure you ask for a quote at time of booking.
Each mold impression takes up to 5 minutes to complete; the standard appointment is 45 minutes which gives you time to choose your frame, finish etc. and to make sure your child is calm and happy. Appointment duration will vary depending on the amount of casts you require.

Casts can be taken at all ages, the ideal age for babies being 0-6 months before they become extra wiggly. Prices shown on the website are for babies and children under 4 years of age. Please contact me for prices for older children and adults.

How long before I received the finished product?
Once we complete the mold taking process, we move on to the casting stage where the mold is cast with hard stone. Once the cast has hardened and any defects in the surface are repaired, it takes 2 days for the cast to dry enough to accept a finish. Depending on the finish and style you selected we will complete the mounting process and deliver/ship to you within 2 weeks.

Yes. The molding gel/ impression powder (alginate) is non-toxic and biodegradable, which means it is completely safe use on even the most sensitive skin. You may have seen something similar used when you visit the dentist to have a mouth guard or oral impression taken.
This has been used in the dental industry for decades and there has not been any reported reaction to it. MSDS available on request.

We accept Cash, Credit or Debit, Paypal Transaction and checks! We take full payment at the time of the casting. For casts over a total value of $250 we can take a 50% deposit and receive the second 50% prior to delivery.

This is something that we are testing at the moment and hope to be able to provide a kit which will make it possible to achieve great results. There are DIY kits available but they are of poor quality and we’d like to avoid offering a product that produces poor results.

The casting process requires lots of practice, something which can be expensive if you are buying kits. As lifecasting specialists, we have experience which helps to ensure that I get a good result. There are a lot of kits out there that are a waste of money, using poor grade products to keep the price down which in turn gives you poor results. Tommy’s Toes uses the highest grade products available, ensuring the quality is A+.

Unfortunately not all molds are perfect, for the most part major defects can be spotted as soon as the impression has set. Very occasionally though this is not obvious until the final gypsum casts are removed and it may be necessary to arrange another casting session.(free of charge)

We use high quality shadow box frames which are great viewed from any angle. They are fully sealed which protects your casts and keeps them dust free. Our frames are produced in Ohio, are hand finished and are available in a choice of standard colors with custom colors available on request.
